The goal of these two initiatives is (in combination with the Lecturer Learning Community) to provide lecturers with opportunities that enable them to become more effective teachers.

Lecturer Teaching Development Grants

This grant program provides up to $750 per person to lecturers looking to enhance their work as teachers for Ohio State. Possible uses for the grant are:

  • supporting travel to attend or present at a teaching conference
  • paying the registration or other fees associated with participating in a teaching-related webinar or institute
  • funding a research project on teaching at Ohio State.


In order to apply for the funds, applicants will be required to describe the opportunity for which they will use the funds, to explain how they hope that opportunity will lead to more effective teaching at Ohio State, to outline plans for continued professional development beyond the award, and to provide a detailed budget that includes any additional sources of funding. Winners will only be reimbursed up to the actual amount of expenditure.

Applications will be reviewed by an advisory committee coordinated by UCAT.

This program will be run in two rounds each year so that applicants can apply in the fall or spring semester. The funding must be used within 12 months of the application deadline.

Applicants will only be permitted to win the award one time per year, and priority consideration will be given to those who have not won previously.

Local Lecturer Support Grant

This program encourages and supports individual academic units to devise local support for their lecturers and to develop models and best practices that can be adapted by other units at Ohio State.

Through this program, academic units are awarded up to $5,000 per academic year to enhance professional development for their lecturers at the unit-level through the provision of year-long, structured support customized to meet the needs of their lecturers. An additional $1000 is available to compensate a lecturer appointed to help coordinate the unit’s efforts.

Application Process

In order to apply for this grant, a faculty representative with the support of the unit head will submit a proposal for a year’s worth of programming/support for lecturers. The application and additional information are available here.

Criteria for the Award

The applications will be evaluated on completion of all required sections, clarity and appropriateness of the proposed outcomes, and feasibility of the plan and budget. Departments who have larger lecturer populations will be given preference over those with only a few lecturers. Applications will be reviewed by an advisory committee coordinated by UCAT.

Additional Information

Two or more units may collaborate on a single application and set of programs to collectively serve their combined lecturer populations. Such applications are eligible for up to $5,000 per unit, if the budget justifies the expenditure.

Departments who are awarded the grant will be permitted to apply again in subsequent years for a reduced amount (up to $2500), though priority consideration will be given to departments that have not previously won the grant.
