Welcome.
TOAST is an interdisciplinary organization and includes faculty from diverse academic fields who support their own Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) efforts and advocate for SoTL development with their colleagues. The TOAST Community of Practice (CoP) offers university teachers a community of colleagues and mentors, and a place to learn through trial and error, engage in rich discussions, and develop new pedagogies.
The interdisciplinary nature of TOAST crosses departmental and subject matter boundaries, to concentrate on the quality of teaching itself––and adds richness to the discussions from a multitude of perspectives.
Who Can Join TOAST?
TOAST is open to anyone in quality teaching and research on college-level teaching and learning. Click here>> to learn how you can join.
What is a Community of Practice (CoP)?
Lave and Wenger
introduced the concept of a Community of Practice
(CoP)––a
set of relations among persons, activities and world, over time and
in relation with other tangential and overlapping CoPs.
In this community, a newcomer learns from old-timers by participating in certain tasks that relate to the practice of the community. Over time the newcomer moves from peripheral to full participation (also known as Legitimate Peripheral Participation, or LLP).
