Do you need to revise a course because of changes in enrollment or for conversion to semesters? Are you preparing to teach a new course, or are you frustrated or bored with one you are already teaching? Consider applying for a Course Design Institute (CDI)!
The goal of the CDI is to provide you with the tools, the time, and the collegial support to dig in and design or re-design any course. At the end of the institute, you will have created the basic structure of your new course, including plans for a syllabus, assignments, assessment tools, and a course outline. Perhaps even more importantly, you will have had a chance to interact with a diverse group of colleagues from across our university, allowing you to share your own ideas about teaching and gather new ideas from your peers.
Each participant must commit to attending all five sessions, so please carefully consider your availability before applying. To create a close community environment, we limit registration to 12 participants for each institute, and these participants are chosen from an applicant pool. Visit ucat.osu.edu to submit your application soon!

Co-sponsored with and facilitated by CSTW
Writing Together: Collaboration, Group Work, and Peer Review
Tuesday, April 24, 2012
11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m.
Peer review and group work are commonplace in many writing classrooms, but as instructors we are often uncertain of how to implement these activities so that they serve our students and course goals. In this workshop, we’ll explore different approaches to peer review and group work, focusing on how collaborative writing and group activities can enrich students’ learning experiences. We’ll consider the pedagogical rationale for these kinds of assignments, as well as practical methods for enacting and assessing group work and peer review in class.
Using Writing to Enhance Discussion and Class Participation
Monday, April 30, 2012
3:30 p.m.–5:00 p.m.
When students participate in class activities and discussions, the result can be a rewarding and valuable learning experience. Yet, often engaging students can prove difficult for instructors. This workshop focuses on strategies for using writing to enhance the level of discussion and participation in class. We will address the value of using writing to focus and plan class discussion, and discuss different approaches—from integrating the Carmen discussion board to asking students to write in class.

Participants in this workshop will share their teaching best practices, and learn about venues available to instructors for publishing resources and other teaching discoveries. Publishing venues in the biological, biomedical, and environmental sciences will be emphasized, but participants are encouraged to bring information relevant to their particular field.

“Hot Moments” in the Classroom
Wednesday, May 16, 2012
1:30 p.m.–3:00 p.m.
150 Younkin Success Center
Co-sponsored with and facilitated by InterACT
How do I facilitate the charged and tense energy that has occurred in my class because one of the students has made a seemingly unintentional yet discriminatory remark?
The InterACT Theatre Troupe will perform a piece that explores methods for facilitating such charged moments. These moments occur in all types of courses. Often, faculty and TAs respond with silence because they do not want to make the situation worse, or because they do not feel confident that they have the skills for diffusing or facilitating a conversation around this moment. This interactive workshop will provide the opportunity to discuss and actively explore some options with the InterACT characters. Participants will be able to develop strategies for effectively defusing hot moments and turning them into productive learning opportunities.
