About OSTEP
MID-CAREER AND SENIOR FACULTY PROGRAM
- Are you interested in trying something different in your teaching?
- Have you recently taken on a new teaching role, such as teaching large
classes, working with GTAs, or designing a new course?
- Is there some aspect of your teaching that you'd like to improve?
- Do you want to make changes, but feel like you need additional
support and resources?
Overview
The OSTEP Mid–Career and Senior Faculty Program offers faculty a
year–long opportunity to focus on their teaching as part of a community of
peers. This program
has been designed to revitalize the career development of tenured faculty at
Ohio State by establishing collegial relationships across disciplines and
reinforcing a faculty culture that brings together the scholarship of teaching and
research. More information about this and other OSTEP programs
is available here>>.
Program Elements
Faculty selected for the program are expected to:
- Develop and implement a personal teaching enhancement plan (e.g., incorporating
new methods such as collaborative learning or technology; revising ways to assess
student learning or collect feedback; adapting strategies for large classes).
- Attend the annual OSTEP reception (this year's date to be announced).
- Participate in monthly sessions organized by a peer facilitator and supported
by UCAT resources. The Program is designed to form community among participants,
so participation in the monthly sessions is essential.
- Present on their projects informally within the group as their work progresses
and provide feedback on other participants' projects.
Participants may also choose to:
- Attend the Lilly National
Conference on College Teaching (November 19–22, 2009 at Miami University of Ohio).
- Attend events
organized by UCAT or the Academy of Teaching, e.g., special–topic seminars or forums;
workshops; and/or book discussion groups.
- Present or facilitate a session at an UCAT–coordinated event to discuss the project
or report results of the implementation.
- Prepare a scholarship of teaching project for publication or conference presentation.
Program Implementation
- The program will start in the Autumn Quarter 2009 and end in the Spring Quarter 2010.
- Each participant will receive $1000 for teaching enhancement activities (e.g.,
attending a teaching conference; purchasing books on teaching; et al.).
Application Deadline
This year's application deadline is Friday, May 1, 2009.
For further information, please contact Faculty & TA Development either by e–mail
at ucat@osu.edu or by telephone at 614–292–3644.
Selection Process and Criteria
- All faculty members at associate or higher rank (including clinical faculty) who
have taught at Ohio State for at least five years are eligible to apply for the
program. Eight participants will be selected from all applicants.
- Applications will be reviewed by a steering committee for OSTEP. Consideration
will be given to the quality of the proposed project, the diversity of this faculty
cohort (e.g., gender, ethnicity; disciplinary distribution), and commitment to being
a member of a community. Decisions will be made jointly by the committee and UCAT.
- If you already have applied for the 2009–2010 academic year but have not yet
received confirmation of receipt, please contact us via e–mail at
ucat@osu.edu.
